Growing Roots – A Journey of Friendship and Art in Istanbul

On December 3rd, 2022, a decade-long journey of friendship and creativity culminated in our first collaborative exhibition, Growing Roots, at Arthereistanbul. Alongside my dear friends and fellow artists Chimene Zouki and Cynthia Naoum, we explored themes of growth, connection, and transformation—both personal and artistic.

The narrative behind Growing Roots was deeply symbolic for us. We likened ourselves to seeds, sown in the same soil by mere chance, growing through changing seasons under the same sun. As the years passed, our roots grew deeper, intertwining as we leaned on each other, shared our dreams, and sought answers to life’s many questions. Through the darkness and the light, we supported one another’s growth, embracing the cycles of life.

This exhibition was more than just a showcase of our art—it was a celebration of our 10 years of friendship, which began in 2012 at the Lebanese University - Institute of Fine Art. Back then, we connected through vulnerability, each of us revealing our true selves and appreciating the honesty we found in one another. Over the years, we have gone through countless stages of growth together, always pushing each other to be better, to be honest, and to face the shadows so we could rise toward the light.

Our art process, like our friendship, is grounded in this honesty and vulnerability. We pour our thoughts and emotions onto canvas and paper, capturing our growth and the moments of insight that come through deep introspection. The pieces displayed in Growing Roots were like visual diaries, each one reflecting a stage of our inner journey.

The opening night was a magical experience, filled with beautiful souls who came to support us. It was heartwarming to have friends, family, and the vibrant artistic community of Istanbul gathered together to celebrate art and connection. Special thanks to Rassil Haidar for the stunning photos and footage, and to Arthereistanbul for their warm hospitality.

This exhibition was a reminder of the power of friendship, honesty, and growth—both in art and in life. I feel incredibly lucky to have shared this journey with Chimene and Cynthia, and I look forward to continuing to grow and create together.
